S O L I T A R Y L I F E "Four remarkable decades of creativity. And a life touched by tragedy and marked by quiet brilliance. Now on BBC4 an intimate portrait of one of Britain's finest songwriters and the founder of Fairport Convention: Richard Thompson" BBC4 - 9.00pm, Friday Feb 07 2003 "Richard Thompson: Solitary Life" provides an insight into his life alongside exclusive footage. With: Billy Connolly, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Thompson, Simon Nicol, oldest sister, Harry Shearer, John Kirkpatrick, Steve Hochman,Loudon Wainwright III, Nancy Covey BBC4 has visited him at home in London and Los Angeles - first time such intimate access has been granted. Billy Conolly observes: "He's a quiet guy, he's almost an anorak our Richard, you wouldn't think he's the guy with the guitar shaking the town!"
The film includes versions of "Solitary Life" and "Kidzz", neither of which appear on the new album. Director Paul Bernays: "Obviously one hour is scant time to do justice to someone of Richard's talent, achievement and character. I hope I've caught something of his spirit though that's for others to judge"
